Can diabetics use sugar scrubs?

I get this question frequently at shows, so I thought I would address it here. The effects of using an ingredient topically is not like the effects of ingesting it. There are also questions about seed oils topically, but that is for a future post.

The short answer...

Yes, diabetics can use sugar scrubs, but with some precautions. Sugar scrubs are topical and do not affect blood sugar levels. However, diabetics are prone to skin sensitivities and slower wound healing, so it's essential to:

1. Avoid broken skin: Do not use sugar scrubs on cuts, sores, or irritated areas.

2. Moisturize afterward: Diabetics often experience dry skin, so follow up with a good moisturizer to prevent dryness or cracking.

3. Choose gentle formulations: Opt for sugar scrubs with nourishing oils and avoid harsh fragrances or irritating additives.

4. Test first: Do a patch test to ensure no adverse reactions occur, especially if you have sensitive skin.

If in doubt, consult a healthcare professional or dermatologist before use.
